Summertime is a season that many people look forward to, as it is a perfect time to have fun and enjoy the sun and the outdoors. However, too much heat can be detrimental to a person’s health and one of the most common conditions or injuries which can possibly occur is heat stroke.

Heat stroke can be life threatening because it can cause serious damage to the brain and other organs, but it is also highly preventable. While it is a very serious case, in fact, the most serious case of heat injury, there are ways for people to be able to avoid it.

Heat stroke is a form of hypothermia and a result of prolonged exposure of a person to too much heat or high temperatures where the body’s temperature control system fails. It is characterized by nausea, confusion, agitation, disorientation, loss of consciousness or even coma.

If you begin to suspect that you are suffering from heat stroke, there are a number of things that you should do. One of the first steps you need to take is to go inside and rest somewhere where there temperature is cooler, like an air-conditioned room. If there is no way for you to go indoors, find a spot that is shaded to avoid getting directly exposed to the sun. Also make sure that you drink enough fluids, especially water, to avoid dehydration.

There are also people who are at greater risk for heat stroke and these are the elderly, as well as younger children. People who stay in the outdoors a lot can be prone to this injury, like the athletes and outdoor workers, so these people have to be very cautious. It is not advisable to leave a person inside the cars under too much heat for it poses a risk for heat stroke.

When you know that you have a condition that requires you to take medications which increase your likelihood for heat-related problems, make sure to exert a conscious effort to avoid the heat as much as possible. Be aware of the symptoms of overheating and know the people to call in case of a heat emergency.
